In this article, the author refutes the idea that history, as an investigation of the human condition over time, is in crisis. He addresses instead the challenges facing historians. To write a "just" account of the past; to craft a metaphor that grasps the world in its dissonance; and to rethink the relation between the self and the "we" in a way that neither the autonomy of the subject nor its will to participate in the society is disputed, are among the most important problems historians currently have to deal with
Young people, who are accused of being woefully uninformed when it comes to historical culture, are not without a certain vision of Quebec history. What is that vision ? Does it vary according to whether someone is francophone, anglophone or allophone ? Does it evolve after a young person has taken the national history course ? What is the real importance of this course in structuring a collective historical memory among young Quebeckers ? Such are the questions discussed in this article, which is the first result of a larger, ongoing research project
Since the “quiet revolution” of the 1960s, Quebec has been searching for a new historical narrative to transmit to its young generations. After briefly describing the content of the history taught until that decade, this article analyses the changes which have since been successively made to the official curricula and situates these changes within the context of the debates on the historical trajectory of the province, debates which have involved the whole of Quebec society and are still being pursued today.
Assuming that a social group exists insofar as it also becomes the subject of its own
history in the theatre of the past, the author attempts to identify some structural
components of the historical narration of French Canadian Quebecers. More precisely,
he identifies the four narrative pillars of the corpus of stories through which
Franco-Quebecers construct a collective representation of themselves, one that
feeds their identity as a people and as an historic nation.
